This breeding simulation is designed for junior and senior students and encourages the development of skills in critical thinking and problem solving as well as promoting an understanding of the scientific method. As a teaching tool, Pea Plant Genetics Lab can be used in a variety of teaching strategies.

Pea Plant Genetics Lab features both a Breeding Simulation Environment and Plant Construction Kit.

Breeding Simulation
Students visually count, categorize and record the individual plants, making this a realistic science experience rather than a secondhand data exercise.
Teachers now have the option to allow the students to use an auto-count system to count up to 100,000 plants in seconds, allowing longer experiments, dihybrid and trihybrid crosses to be completed quickly.
Student reporting is now an option. Students are required to fill in the number and type of plants they observe before the program allows auto-counting, providing the teacher with a report on the students accuracy while counting.

Also includes a Teacher Resource document in pdf format - 110 reproducible pages contain 24 experiments to guide students through examples of:

Other Features of the Breeding Simulation Include:
  • 6 genotype display modes including Tptp, tp+ tp or + tp.

Plant Construction Kit
The Construction Kit allows both students and teachers to create their own plants for unique breeding experiments. The kit features:
  • All 7 of Mendel's mutant genes.
  • The ability to load and save individual or pairs of plants for future experiments.
  • The capacity to make a plant and use it as a parent without the need to save, unlike previous versions.

The Construction Kit has two modes:
  • Student Mode - Construct homozygous plants with a mutation in all Mendel's 7 plant characteristics.
  • Teacher Mode - Select up to 2 mutant genes per characteristic as heterozygous or 1 as homozygous.

Save each plant with one of 3 genotype display options:
  • Always - Display the genotype of the plant during breeding, provided the teachers has set this as an option.
  • Lock Code - Only displayed after a plant's code word has been entered. Good for classroom problem solving and practical tests.
  • Never - Excellent for school or home based assignments.
